What is a chronograph?

To put it very simply: a chronograph is a stopwatch. In this complication we have a pusher to start and pause the time and a pusher to reset the chronograph. These two pushers are located above and below the crown for setting the time. The large hand, often confused with the second hand, indicates the elapsed seconds and is located at 12 o'clock when the chronograph is not activated. We usually have 2 totalizers, i.e. round fields with hands that show the past minutes and hours. But this can vary from chronograph to chronograph. As already mentioned, the "classic" second hand, as we know it from a normal 3-hand watch, does not work as a second hand. Instead, we usually have a normal second hand installed in a 3rd totalizer. Chronographs were originally built for motorsports to measure lap times.
