One of the most legendary models at Rolex: It all started in 1953. Rolex introduced the world's first waterproof wristwatch with the Oyster Perpetual in 1926, but only with a water resistance of 2-3 bar, which was just enough for swimming, but still caused damage. In 1953, August Piccard and his son planned a world record attempt: the deepest dive using a deep-sea capsule. The plan worked and they reached an incredible depth of 3,131.80 meters. But something was strange when it emerged - there was something small attached to the outside of the capsule. The two were not alone on the way down: Hans Wilsdorf mounted the prototype of the first submarine on the outer casing, codenamed Deep-Sea. Just like the two record hunters, the Submariner survived its dive and, like almost all Rolex models, achieved international success. A short time later, the series model followed with a water resistance of 10 bar - and so the first diving watch was born. Originally it came without a date complication in 1966 and in 1979 the water resistance of 30 bar, which is still known today, followed. But the Rolex was not an icon because of its technology: the James Bond classic par excellence still characterizes the Submariner to this day.
