The most important thing about Cartier

Even though Cartier's range is strongly positioned in the jewelry business, the history of watches is far more closely linked to Cartier than many people think. Louis-François Cartier took over his teacher's jewelry business in 1847 and offered the first watches as early as 1859. In 1874, Cartier's son supported him in expanding the watch division and in 1904 the most iconic model followed: the Cartier Santos. But other models are also absolutely timeless pieces: the Pasha by the most famous watch designer Gerald Genta or the Tank, which was released in 1917. Cartier is one of the few companies that still manage to make the design language of decades gone by seem so modern. Both the square case design and the Roman indices are still absolute timeless classics for Gen Z and Gen Alpha. One reason for this is Cartier's ingenious marketing, which has successfully kept these models alive for over 100 years.

Cartier models at a glance

Cartier Santos

It is Cartier's model par excellence: the Santos, which was brought to life in 1904 and has now existed for more than 120 years. This puts it in line with absolutely iconic designs such as the Audemars Piquet Royal Oak or the Rolex Submariner. Rumor has it that with the Santos, Cartier was the first manufacturer to offer watches with leather straps for free sale. To this day, the Cartier Santos is available in countless variations: from steel to gold models in all sizes to fully equipped tourbillion models. The so-called QuickSwitch and SmartLink function, in which you can change individual band links or the entire bracelet with just the push of a button, came to the Santos models from 2018 and thus enables completely free individualization.

Cartier tank

The name Tank is no coincidence: the design is inspired by the British Mark IV tanks and in 1917, at the end of the First World War, the Tank also became part of Cartier. The main identifying feature are the so-called "Brancards", 2 parallel bars that face each other on the left and right of the housing. The track minute track in the middle of the dial is also a classic identifying feature of the tank. Just like the Santos, it is the cult model that has existed for over 100 years. To this day, the Tank is still available in numerous quartz and mechanical caliber variants.

Cartier movements

Caliber 57

The caliber 57 is a quartz movement from Cartier, which was first installed in the small Vermeil models of the Tank.

Caliber 1847 MC

The name is based on the founding year of the Cartier Maison, the manufacture movement comes with a 3-hand and a date complication for the classic models. These include the Santos or Tank, which are equipped with a 40-hour power reserve and 28,800 swingarms. The MC of the 1847 stands for Maison’s Creation, the place where the in-house caliber was developed and built.
